Memcached/NoSQL Appliance

Memcached is an open-source cache that accelerates performance-intensive apps (such as large web sites) by reducing the load on the underlying database. As a key-value store, memcached is also a basic NoSQL non-relational database. Mission-critical applications often have a multi-tiered architecture that includes memcached to maximize performance and service availability. However, traditional memcached throughput, whether used for pure caching or a key-value store, is limited by memory capacity, multi-core scalability, and network bandwidth. It's also often a single point of failure.

The Schooner Appliance for Memcached/NoSQL leverages Intel® multi-core processors, enterprise-class flash memory, and high-performance networking to achieve significantly higher throughput, capacity and availability than is possible using traditional servers. This Schooner Appliance offers:
  • Dramatic consolidation in which eight or more traditional memcached servers may be replaced by a single Schooner Appliance, significantly reducing capital expense, power consumption, rack space, and networking requirements;
  • A 90% reduction in downtime through a rich set of high-availability/disaster-recovery (HA/DR) features including Persistent Caching, Active/Active Replication, RAID5, and Backup & Restore;
  • 100% memcapable plug-and-play compatibility with existing memcached implementations and management tools;
  • Persistence and HA/DR features that provide an enterprise-grade NoSQL key-value store;
  • Support for multiple containers, allowing a single Schooner Appliance to host separate memcached domains, each with different caching or key-value store persistence properties;
  • Stunning performance, handling many more transactions per second than is feasible on traditional servers;

Schooner Memcached/NoSQL Appliances are handling demanding workloads in leading Web 2.0, SaaS, and cloud computing companies today. Customers highly value the resulting savings. For example, using Schooner rather than traditional servers allowed a social networking company to achieve a 10-to-1 reduction and a media company to achieve a 12-to-1 reduction.

Some customers even use this Schooner Appliance as their sole data repository, without a database as the primary data store. For these customers, our comprehensive data and service availability is critical. Customers typically configure the Schooner Appliances with transparent replication and automatic failover, and they use the Schooner Backup/Restore facility for periodic backups for disaster recovery or less catastrophic forms of data corruption, such as those caused by client application defects.

Either for pure caching or as a persistent NoSQL key-value store, the Schooner Appliance for Memcached/NoSQL delivers extremes of performance, availability, and consolidation, today.
