SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 9, 2010 — Schooner Information Technology, Inc., a provider of scalable turnkey data-access appliances, today announced that www.gutefrage.net, the largest question-and-answer portal in Germany with more than 6.5 million unique visitors and 60 million page impressions per month, has purchased Schooner's MySQL Appliance. The Schooner MySQL Appliance has enabled gutefrage.net to reduce database maintenance costs and improve database performance, with each Schooner Appliance replacing eight traditional servers.
gutefrage.net is one of the top ten websites in Germany, offering valuable experience, tips and advice to answer unique questions posed by its community of users. gutefrage.net selected the Schooner MySQL Appliance to address the scalability issues it faces as its user base increases ten percent per month. Each Schooner MySQL Appliance replaces eight servers, reducing cost and complexity while improving performance by as much as 30 percent, and freeing the old servers to be used for other tasks.
"gutefrage.net embraces 'experience over knowledge,' which is why it is so important to us that the user experience is not diminished by slow loading times and poor performance," said Ulrich Nitsche, chief technology officer, gutefrage.net. "The Schooner Appliance has enabled gutefrage.net to increase the performance of the database by 30 percent, even as the data doubled in size during the past six months. And by running one instead of multiple machines, we have realized significant maintenance costs savings."
gutefrage.net selected the Schooner Appliance after testing it for a sister organization and realizing it would be beneficial for meeting the needs of the quickly-growing question-and-answer portal. The Appliance has simplified the scaling to meet gutefrage.net's rapidly growing data requirements by eliminating the need for sharding across multiple masters and allowing the consolidation of slaves. In addition to the eight-to-one consolidation, gutefrage.net has also been able to reduce capital expense, power consumption, rack space and networking requirements while ensuring comprehensive data and service availability due to Schooner's rich set of high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR) features (including replication, backup and restore, and RAID).
"Schooner's tight integration of flash memory, multi-core processors and high-performance interconnects enables a more efficient and available MySQL for datacenter operations," said Jerry Rudisin, chief executive officer, Schooner Information Technology. "gutefrage.net is the perfect example of a forward-thinking company that highly values the consolidation and cost savings, as well as the ability to effectively run large master databases with very high throughput and excellent response time."
