Capabilities

SchoonerSQL is based on MySQL and InnoDB for extreme ease of adoption. But SchoonerSQL solves the replication problems of traditional MySQL (5.1, 5.5, and the future 5.6) without sacrificing performance. The main capabilities of SchoonerSQL include:

  • Flexible multi-instance support. SchoonerSQL can be configured with separate MySQL instances to combine multiple master database servers and/or multiple slave database servers. You can run up to 16 separate MySQL databases simultaneously on a single x86 server running SchoonerSQL, and set different administration properties for each.

Get the Most out of Your Servers

SchoonerSQL's innovative software architecture fully exploits the capabilities of modern x86-based servers, storage technology, and network bandwidth. Here are the main hardware considerations needed to get the full benefit of SchoonerSQL:

  • Base Server: Use any HP, Dell, or IBM multi-core x86 server (Intel, not AMD) or blade running Red Hat Linux 5.4 / 5.5 / 6.2 or CentOS 5.4 / 5.5 / 6.2.
  • Multiple cores: SchoonerSQL is extensively multi-threaded to fully exploit multiple processor cores. Use a server with at least two 4-, 6-, or 8-core processors; performance scales linearly with number of cores.
  • Data storage: Your database can be stored on hard drives, SSDs (solid-state drives or flash drives), or SAN. Adding high-performance high-capacity SSDs is the best way to achieve extreme vertical scaling on each server. SSDs dramatically improve performance compared to HDDs, and there's no hard limit to the amount of flash memory that SchoonerSQL can exploit.
  • DRAM: We recommend 64 GB of DRAM, especially when using SSDs for persistent storage since SchoonerSQL caches between DRAM and flash to give you DRAM-type speeds from flash. More DRAM never hurts, but you usually won't need it since SchoonerSQL fully exploits the flash IOPS to deliver performance like what you'd get from using more DRAM.
  • Ethernet: You can use 1 GB Ethernet among servers. You can boost the performance of replication in SchoonerSQL by using 10 GB Ethernet.

Use Flash Memory for Extreme Vertical Scaling

SchoonerSQL does not require flash memory; some users deploy with their data on HDDs and others deploy with their data on SSDs. But most users are interested in someday moving to SSDs for its performance and energy-saving benefits. Moving a database from hard drives to flash drives is a great way to maximize application performance while reducing power consumption, and to achieve extreme vertical scaling. SchoonerSQL has unique patent-pending software optimizations that exploit the high I/O rates of multiple flash drives in parallel to get the most from SSDs.

Annual Subscriptions

SchoonerSQL is licensed on an Annual Subscription basis on a wide range of x86 servers, with the database on hard drives, SSDs (flash memory), or SAN. The quantity-one fee for an Annual Subscription is US $9,500 on any server of up to two sockets, regardless of the number of processor cores. SchoonerSQL licenses for servers with three or more processor sockets cost more because your annual TCO savings are larger. Please contact Schooner sales for a quote on your specific configuration.

The Annual Subscription fee is paid up front, with a discount for pre-payment for multiple years. Substantial volume discounts apply as well as discounts for large project-, site-, and enterprise-wide licenses.
