Benchmarking the Schooner TCO Advantage

How much do you pay for Schooner's superior performance? A lot less than you pay for other, less capable solutions. Using the industry-standard DBT2 benchmark (open-source version of TPC-C) we measured and analyzed the absolute and relative performance as well as the capex and three-year opex for several alternatives for deploying a MySQL database tier. For easy comparison, we normalized the cost data using the Schooner MySQL TCO as 1.00 to show the relative TCO of the other MySQL solutions. Here's what you get:

Schooner wins today against both the current MySQL 5.1.44 and the forthcoming MySQL 5.5.4 due in late 2010. Fusion-io running 5.1.44 is 69% more expensive than Schooner today over three years. Fusion-io running 5.5.4 Beta is 44% more expensive than Schooner today. Schooner offers the best price-performance, now and as MySQL evolves.

Why? Mainly because you just end up needing a lot fewer servers with Schooner, markedly reducing your capex. And of course, flash memory has an inherent power consumption advantage over DRAM and hard drives. Between that benefit and the fewer servers needed with Schooner, you save a lot on opex. The more you spend per kilowatt-hour for electricity to run and cool your MySQL servers, the larger the savings you'll enjoy with Schooner.

Our TCO advantage does NOT factor in other savings from Schooner's zero-risk approach: our solution comes pre-integrated and pre-tuned, with a 100% MySQL Enterprise with InnoDB license certified by Oracle. You don't need to spend money and time on integration and tuning. The TCO model also does not factor in the gains from reusing your current servers for other purposes, which can replace other planned capex.
