Benchmarks: The Good, the Bad, and the Useful

Schooner's two software products — SchoonerSQL™and Schooner Membrain™ (the smart memcached, optimized for flash memory) — have unique optimizations to fully exploit modern flash memory. SchoonerSQL is used whether the database is on hard drives, SAN, flash drives or Flashcache, and provides the fastest and lowest risk path to the full benefit of flash when you need it. Schooner Membrain requires flash drives.

Our products transform standard x86 servers and flash memory into high-performance, cost-effective super-servers. A Schooner-powered MySQL server delivers MySQL performance, minimal application downtime, easy scaling, and maximum datacenter efficiency. A Schooner-powered Membrain server does the same for software caching and a persistent NoSQL data store.

SchoonerSQL Performance with Flash

Single-node performance, DBT-2 TPM at 1,000 warehouses

This section hosts a growing set of real benchmarks to give you a sense of what's possible using SchoonerSQL or Membrain. Benchmarking with Schooner's software is easy because SchoonerSQL and Membrain are each 100% compatible with the APIs and applications you're already using. But benchmarking with Schooner's software sometimes takes some imagination — because you may be quite accustomed to keeping your MySQL databases, cache, or NoSQL data stores in DRAM and sharding across many servers. When that's been the only way to get decent performance, you need to think about how to drive a much more severe load on each Schooner-powered server. Our customers are generally interested in Schooner because they want to handle way bigger loads with way fewer nodes, so they want to generate non-wimpy workloads that can show the full power of Schooner. Our sales team can give you some guidance on the best ways to do this with your workload.

Because we deliver such compelling savings, many of our customers use Schooner as part of their first large-scale move to flash memory. We've found that it's often useful to separate the evaluation from the decision about what flash drives deliver the best economics when you procure them in volume. You'll want to try SchoonerSQL or Membrain with flash — that's what they're optimized for. But don't hesitate to evaluate using PCIe flash and buy SAS or SATA drives, or vice versa. The flash market is very competitive, with excellent offerings from many sources in multiple form factors.
